Inspirational Burns Victim Turia Pitt Shows Off New Nose [Photos]

Posted in: , ,

27-year-old marathoner Turia Pitt has had a long road back to health after suffering horrific burns during a fire at the ultra-marathon run in Western Australia in 2011. She spent two years in hospital and had seven fingers amputated during an endless series of operations.

Turia told Woman’s Day magazine she has now reached what she’s hopes will be the last big milestone in her long recovery - getting a long dreamed of new nose. Following a further operation to ‘refine her nose and widen her nostrils’, Turia says she's planning to participate in the Melbourne Ironman next year.

Widow of Boston Bombing Suspect Speaks Out

Posted in: ,

A few days after the one of the boston bombing suspects was killed, and the other taken into custody, it was revealed that the older brother was married to an American woman, Katherine Russell Tsarnaev. She had been brought up Christian and had converted to Islam after marrying Tamerlan Tsarnaev, and she also was quite devout and observed the muslim practice of covering her head with a scarf.

This had made a lot of Americans to come out hard against her, and also to other people who may be married to other religions and cultures, and assimilating into them. I don't think that is a fair call or judgement to make, this is just one case and should not be extended to every person marrying across cultures or into Islam, and also no one knows at this time the full details of what happened with Katherine Russell's husband, how he was radicalized, and if she knew what was going on.

Well, her lawyer, Amato DeLuca, released the following statement this afternoon.

Our Firm is representing Katherine Russell and she has asked us to make a short statement. As you know from news reports, Katie married her husband in June of 2010. Since then, she has been living in Cambridge, raising her child and working long hours, caring for people in their homes who are unable to care for themselves. Katie grew up in Rhode Island and has always remained close to her parents and sisters here, as well as her extended family. She is fortunate to have the support of her loving family now, as they struggle to come to terms with these events and the deep sorrow we all feel following the events of last week. Meanwhile, she is doing everything she can to assist with the investigation.

Manhunt Over in Boston Marathon Bombings

Posted in: , ,
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev

Earlier this evening, the Police captured Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev after his brother was killed in a shooutout last night. The news broke as we had dinner and I let a huge weight off. The prospect of terror attacks is not an easy one, and it's not easier knowing America may have even more enemies that we had previously known. But it is a relief that at least one of the suspects was captured alive to yield some information and also face the family of those he and his brother killed. According to USAToday;

Police arrested the 19-year-old at about 8:45 p.m., after finding him holed up in a covered boat stored in the backyard of a Watertown residence. He was led to an ambulance and driven to a hospital, where he is listed in serious condition.
Tsarnaev's capture came two hours after Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick ended a Boston-area lockdown after a massive, day-long search of suburban Watertown, which seemingly failed to flush out the teenager.
Dozens of bystanders cheered and applauded as police left the scene.

Couple Wed After the Boston Marathon Explosions

Posted in: , ,

After the shocking news yesterday of the Boston Marathon Explosions [see post], a couple of the marathon runners, Robert Watling and Kelli Johnston went ahead to get married in the Boston Common just three hours later. The couple have a long history of running together, and had been planning this post-marathon wedding ever since Watling proposed to Johnston back in October, after they both completed the Chicago Marathon. Happy married life to them.

Boston Marathon Explosion: A Moment of Silence

Posted in: , ,

I was in a waiting room when the breaking news came on CNN, two explosions at the Boston Marathon. Two people were dead and about 20 injured. Every eye was glued to the TV and as each minutes passed, the number of those injured continued to rise. I went on Twitter and soon found that an 8 years old was one of those dead. Reading the clip below on the HuffPost made me even more sad.
Boston Children’s Hospital received eight patients injured at the explosion at the Boston Marathon. Patients’ conditions ranged from good to serious. There were no patient deaths among the patients brought to Boston Children’s from the scene. Our patients included:
A 9-year-old girl with leg trauma who is in the operating room.
A 42-year-old parent of a patient is being treated in the ED.
A 7-year-old boy is being treated in the ED for a minor leg injury.
A 12 year old with a femur fracture has been admitted.
A 2 year-old-boy with a head injury has been admitted to the Medical/Surgical ICU.

May the souls of those dead rest in peace, and God grant peace and healing to those injured and all their families.
